Workshop on the Madrid Protocol and preparation of promotional materials

Under its Annual Work Plan 3, ARISE+ IPR organised a workshop on ‘Madrid Protocol - A Route to Global Branding’. It was held on 6 April 2021, in coordination with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and with the support of the Delegation of the European Union in Malaysia. The workshop targeted Malaysian entrepreneurs, aiming to raise awareness on the Madrid Protocol and promote the use of the system among local stakeholders when filing trade marks abroad.

The event gathered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), export and producer associations, IP advisers and professionals and other relevant ASEAN stakeholders. The advantages and benefits of the Madrid System were extensively propounded by Mr Peter Willimott, Officer-in-Charge at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), Singapore Office. Mrs Zaiton Haris, Head of Madrid Unit, Trademark Formality and International Registration Division at MyIPO, provided information, strategies and tips for the applicants when filing their trade mark application via the Madrid System. ARISE+ IPR Expert Mr Ernesto Rubio gave a presentation on protecting trade marks in the European Union market.

This activity also included:

  1. drafting the Madrid Booklet for Malaysia;
  2. preparing the Hague Booklet for Viet Nam;
  3. updating the existing country-specific information booklets for the Madrid Protocol and the Hague Booklet.

These booklets serve as a practical guide and toolkit for ASEAN IP Offices and MSMEs. They outline procedures for filing trade marks and designs under these treaties and put forward strategies for making the best use of the international registration systems.
